Clubs and Holiday Programmes

We run school clubs and holiday programmes at a variety of Wellington schools as well as at our own lab.
If your preferred location or time isn't listed on the right, please request another location/time.

Astrolab

Astrolab is a weekly after school club for girls and boys interested in the creative use of computers. Each member gets a laptop to work with. The intent of each afternoon is to have something tangible created, this could be as simple as a web posting or as complex as a Custom T-shirt design. All work will be posted here on our showcase page*.

Club nights are built around five key elements:

Create - Play - Share - Remix - Learn

Topics covered include:
  • Animation - Stopmotion, Cell, 3d, stick figures
  • Game Making - 3d and 2d
  • Interactive Art - Scratch, Processing
  • 3D design - Google Sketchup, Blender
  • Graphic Design - Posters, Zines
  • Web Design - Blogs
  • Electronics - Arduino, motors
  • Video and audio editing

Each Club is limited to the first 10 registrations and is for Year 5 to Year 8. Payment for full term to be paid prior to the beginning of term. We are currently at Te Aro School and Brooklyn School. Feel free to contact us with any questions. We are always on the lookout for other schools and will be starting up one for High School age kids soon.

Holiday Programme

Every school break we run a holiday programme for Year 5 to 10 children. This is an opportunity to focus on some of the topics we do in the club, visit some inspiring workplaces and institutions in Wellington City and also to get a bit more messy with craft and mixed-media. These are held in our creative space on Cuba Street, overlooking Glover park.

* Only first names or pseudonyms will be used when posting items on the net. No photos or addresses will be posted. Students will need to have an email address they can access during class; to register on the occasional website (the email address will only be used for this). All work will be released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share Alike Licence (This means anyone can remix their work but not profit off it).

"Alan has shown me the whole new world of digital media, if it wasn't for him my experiences in I.T would have been limited to playing video games and watching cat videos on the internet. Computers can be used in such cool ways and Alan has really expanded my knowledge and creativity!"

Zebedee Schrader - Student

"Alan is a great teacher who is very adept at facilitating kids to find their own interests in this field. After each lesson we were constantly impressed by the new skills, new directions and interesting learning that was occurring."

Mary Daish - Parent
